What do PPCC Medical Assistant students study?
The field of Medical Assisting is expanding in Colorado faster than average and hospitals and healthcare clinics are beginning to hire more medical office staff & clinical assistants to fulfill these foundation roles.
At PPCC Medical Assistant (program information word document)or Clinical Office Assistant (program information word document) students will learn to assist with clinical and administrative functions as employees within the healthcare field.
Students will become familiar with the health care system, medical terminology, interpersonal relationships, learn how to apply medical clinical skills and assist patients in their healthcare.
Students will also learn general pharmacology, clinical and laboratory skills, phlebotomy, an introduction to medical office management. Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology (study of diseases) are also completed.

AAS Medical Assistant Program Student Learning Outcomes (SLO):
Students will be able to:
- Identify and describe body system structures and/or, disorders, and/or diseases.
- Discuss legal and/or ethical issues as applicable to medical practices.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills.
- Perform medical administrative and/or financial tasks.
- Perform accepted clinical and/or laboratory skills for the ambulatory care setting.
Clinical Office Assistant Certificate
This certificate is designed to prepare individuals to work in clinics or physicians’ offices as clinical assistants. Successful graduates from this program will be able to provide physicians assistance with physical examinations, diagnostic tests, in-office laboratory testing and treatment procedures.
Upon completion of the Clinical Office Assistant Certificate, students should be able to:
- Manage patient accounts and records (e.g., coding, billing, bookkeeping).
- Illustrate the normal functions and common pathologies of body systems (e.g., cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological).
- Interpret the use and side effects of drugs commonly used to treat diseases affecting body systems.
- Perform administrative duties used in medical offices.
- Perform examinations, treatments, and procedures associated with medical specialties.
- Collect, handle, and examine laboratory specimens.
